"Why so serious?" the Joker said to Batman in actor Heath Ledger's villainous voice. This perspective is what inspired Phillies reliever Archie Bradley by introducing the home run hat to Phillies' culture. The Phillies are not new to wild incantations or lucky charms like Brad Miller's "Bamboo Power". However, this team is in dire need of an upgrade in efficiency and play.
Many teams have meshed well and created a defining culture that helps motivate and energize them. The Phillies just seemed dead in the water after the abysmal May. Now, the Phillies seem to be having fun and it seems there are a few reasons why.
Home Run Hat
Archie Bradley's Home Run hat was an injection of fun and confidence that the Phillies need at this particular juncture. The Phillies are sitting at a point where they need to either go for it or not. It is that simple. Phillies Phans have been desperate to see October baseball in South Philadelphia and this is the year they can and should do it.
J.T. Realmuto and others have mentioned the atmosphere of the Phillies is serious and welcomes much of what Bradley has to offer. Bradley does need to shut down more innings after a rough start to the season. It seems the newly signed reliever did just that in the first game of the two-game series against the New York Yankees. Bradley fanned the Yankees with 2 strikeouts and got the win in relief! This moved his ERA needle south and hopefully, this energy will keep rolling.
Luke Williams
The 24-year-old USA Baseball player and Phillies prospect Luke Williams donned the red pinstripes for the first time in a major league game on June 8th. Williams, wearing #30, through four games, has a .400 AVG, 1 home run, 2 RBIs, and 4 for 10 H/AB.
The Illinois native was already making moves when he was chosen to be a part of Team USA Baseball in the Olympics this summer, but now he is living the dream in the MLB. Williams traded one World Series manager, Mike Scioscia, for another, Joe Girardi, so he can finally show his worth to the organization that needs more of its prospects to pan out. Hopefully, Williams lasts longer on the bench and in the field than Nick Maton did. For now, Williams is the spark the Phillies need and have right now.
"Clutch" Baseball
The "Clutch" factor is something that has escaped many of the Phillies players this season, but recent events have begged the question, "Has the tide turned for the better?" Many of the Phillies are hitting and defending on all cylinders which is exactly what this team needs to win the NL East.
Vince Velasquez, Zack Wheeler, and Zach Eflin are the trio that is walking the Phillies back to a .500 team. "Vinny Velo" putting things together and finding some sort of consistency is exactly what the doctor ordered. "Wheels" is outperforming everyone's expectations and has a strong case to make the All-Star team this year. "Ef" has been battling for the Phillies by keeping a low WHIP and a sub-4 ERA is commendable.
Odubel Herrera, Jean Segura, J.T. Realmuto, and Bryce Harper have all stepped up and are consistently in the line-up to produce instead of strikeout. Alec Bohm is steadily on the rise and hitting more like his Rookie of the Year runner-up self. Remarkably, Ronald Torreyes has stepped up and has been a huge asset for the Phillies since losing Didi Gregorius for a few weeks now.
Overall, the Phans and the organization have known this team has the players and talent to compete at an elite level and win the NL East. Now it is up to the players to prove their paychecks and the expectations the city of Philadelphia has for them. The fact that the Phightin' Phils are having fun is going to bode well for Phans everywhere. With luck, this will be the catalyst the Phillies need to improve off of a rough start to the season.
